On British Swimming’s official page some of Smart’s former teammates have tried to put into words how they would like to remember their former friends.
“I have tried to find the words but I am so shocked by the news that I don’t know what to say. Helen is a passionate character, always happy and a great teammate and friend. He was a dedicated athlete and had a fantastic work ethic which he draws on both in sport but also in everyday life,” wrote former world champion Katy Sexton.
“I am so grateful for all the memories we have together traveling the world. I really respect you. You are an inspiration to so many and you will always have a special place in my heart,” wrote Sarah Ruckwood.
