After a speech in which he denounced a police chief and a judge, the former prime minister of Pakistan has been charged with threats under terrorism laws.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is being investigated for threats to police and courts, following a speech he gave on Saturday. Now he is charged under Pakistan’s terrorism laws, reported the Washington Post on Monday evening.
– Imran Khan’s speech, and the threats he made, created fear among the police, courts and the public. It undermines the peace of the country, said the police who charged him.
In his speech, Khan accused the police of torturing one of his supporters, and called on the police chief and a judge to “get ready” because they would “take action” against them. reports the BBC.
On Saturday night, several hundred Khan supporters gathered outside his residence in the capital, Islamabad. They wanted to prevent the police from arresting him.
– Imran Khan’s arrest is a red line for us. If violated, it will lead to something very bad, said Murad Saeed, who is a senior member of the Tehreek-e-Insaf Khan party.
– We want to stay within the framework of the constitution, but people are upset and very angry, he further warned.
Imran Khan, who first came to power after a past as a cricket star, was defeated by a vote of no confidence in April and had to step down as the country’s leader. He has since directed sharp criticism of Pakistan’s police and military.
Khan has previously received a lot of criticism for his confrontational appearance and economic policies. He fostered ties with the country’s radical mullahs and the country’s old elite, even though he had pledged to fight corruption.
