– I think I should amputate my leg

The customer had purchased a packet of chili cheese for the burger from supermarket chain Aldi in the UK, but immediately discovered something was wrong.

– Had to postpone the barbecue night

Even though there was still a week before the cheese expired, there was green mold on the wrapped slices of cheese.

– This ruined the first sunny weekend of the year. I’ll have to put off the entire barbecue night, until I get more cheese, the person wrote.

The expiration date on the cheese package is May 27th, but according to customers, the cheese had gone moldy on the day of purchase, May 19th.

Senior adviser Catherine Signe Svindland in the biological food safety section of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority explains that many species of mushrooms produce poisons (toxins) to protect themselves from the environment.

– Cannot be deleted

Mold toxins are called mycotoxins, and they can form when mold grows on food. Some mycotoxins are found only in the mold colonies themselves, but most are excreted in food, invisible to the naked eye.

– Most mycotoxins can withstand heat treatment, so they cannot be removed by heat treatment or other treatment of food, explained Svindland further.

Hard cheese with mold is edible after cutting at least a centimeter around any visible mold.

– Mold grows further into most foodstuffs than we can see with the naked eye, and there may be toxins in other parts of the product besides the mold visible on them, explains Svindland.
