How well do you remember 1988?

There are probably a lot of songs that you might have forgotten.

In the winter of 1988, namely after the New Year, there was a song that completely devastated everyone in this country. The song is “Heaven is a Place on Earth” by Belinda Carlisle. The former vocalist of the hugely successful girl band The Go-Go’s is an undisputed presence on the Norwegian charts. The song, which uses parts of an aria written by Bach, also became number 1 in the US, UK, Sweden and Switzerland. The album from which the song was taken also took first place.

Although Belinda had several albums before and after that sold well in the US, this was her only hit album and her only best-selling album in Norway.

There was another ballad that followed right behind Belinda in the first half of the same year, and that was China in Your Hand with the group T’Pau. The band, which took its name from the TV series Star Trek, had its only hit in Norway with the song, which held the first position for a long time.

Other songs to listen to this spring are Ute til Lunch with their Ute til lunx, Bros with When Will I Be Famous and Always on my Mind with the Pet Shop Boys.

The summer hit in Norway that year was Viggo Sandvik, from Vazelina Bilopphøggers, who sang Fisking i Valdres.

Also popular were Transvision Vamp with I Want Your Love, which became their biggest hit in Norway (in their native UK, the sequel Baby I Don’t Care did better) and weatherman Vidar Theisen…

As Christmas approaches, it’s One 2 Many with Downtown that causes the most chaos, but we probably remember this one most:

Other songs we listened to in 1988 were:

1988 was also the year that Imperiet and Ultravox disbanded.

That same year, Bob Dylan was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (along with the Beach Boys, Beatles, The Drifters and The Supremes).

Michael Jackson bought the Neverland ranch and set a record with five number 1 singles from the same album.

Celine Dion won the Melodi Grand Prix for France with this song:

U2 reached the number one spot on the US charts with Rattle and Hum, this was the first time since 1980 that The River had achieved this.

Music also lost some of its heroes this year. Chet Baker and Roy Orbison both died in 1988.

Of those born that year, the most famous in music is probably Rihanna:

George Michael also won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1988 (he won the Grammy Awards in 1989, but for 1988).

It could also be mentioned that 1988 was the year Pixies released Surfer Rosa, Metallica released …and Justice for All and Public Enemy released It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.
