– We have to make sure that there is enough time before the results are announced on September 5, said committee chairman Graham Brady after the meeting on Monday night.
He also reiterated that the two remaining candidates after the upcoming election will be the subject of the main vote among Conservative Party members.
The 1922 Committee was responsible for holding elections for leadership within the party. According to Brady, nominations will open on Tuesday. The deadline for nomination as a candidate for leadership ends on the same day. Each candidate, however, must have the support of 20 party members in Parliament to be nominated, Brady further said, according to Sky News.
Wednesday first round
The 1922 Committee is preparing for the first round of elections on Wednesday and perhaps a new round of elections already on Thursday in connection with the election of a successor to Boris Johnson. To advance from the first round of elections to the next, a candidate must receive at least 30 votes from party lawmakers.
Brady expects to arrive at the two candidates on Monday 18 July. It is then the party members who, in a primary vote by post, will decide which of them will be the new party leader and thus the new prime minister of the UK.
A lot about feet
Several candidates have registered for the match over the weekend. Among them are former Health Minister Sajid Javid, Foreign Minister Liz Truss and former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak. Javid and Sunak were the first to resign from the government last week because they no longer trusted Johnson, while Truss chose to remain as secretary of state.
Boris Johnson announced on Thursday that he was stepping down as party leader and stepping down as Prime Minister.
Among at least eleven people seeking to replace him are former health minister Jeremy Hunt, finance minister Nadhim Zahawi and trade minister Penny Mordaunt.
