– As a major international sport, we cannot sit idly by and watch Russia and Belarus attack our friends in Ukraine. If there’s one thing we know that Putin is proud of, it’s a Russian sports performance, and ice hockey at least. “It’s only natural, therefore, that we are now clear in our actions,” said ice hockey president Tage Pettersen.
On Sunday, the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association, along with seven other member states, sent a signed letter to the board of the International Ice Hockey Association (IIHF).
– I am very pleased that most of the international ice hockey families over the weekend have agreed to urge the councils of international federations to lay their feet for Russia and Belarus, said Pettersen.
Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia are the countries that, along with Norway, are now demanding that the IIHF exclude Russian and Belarusian teams, athletes and shopkeepers at all levels of international ice hockey.
The letter also demanded that IIHF immediately suspend its cooperation with the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
– With this, we also support the sports council statement, where they encourage all special unions to work towards our international federation. Once again, Norwegian ice hockey is clear in our international message, Pettersen concludes.
The NIHF wants to encourage ice hockey families to support the NRC’s fundraising campaign for the civilian population in Ukraine. Your prize contributed, regardless of size, and can be tilted to 2142.
