Odders Lab, the dream of leading video games in virtual reality

In the last decade, a group of leading companies in the video game sector in Andalusia have consolidated, as is the case with Genera Games –now called Scoopely– and Axes In Motion, which were acquired by an international group. They are a company specializing in the development of mobile games, which are sold through major platforms such as Google Play or the Apple Store, and have given rise to new projects such as Viva Games. Now the Seville company Weird Laboratory want to join this list and, for this, are consolidating in a different niche: it development of games and applications for devices in virtual reality, a segment that is fully developed both in the United States and in European countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. Their games are accessed via platforms such as Meta (from Facebook) or Pico (owned by Tik Tok owners).

This ‘startup’ first launched a rhythm training game named ‘ohShape’, which is his debut in the business. The virtual chessboard follows ‘chess club’ and a training app called ‘body fight’, that triggers the activity. Thanks to these three developments Odders Lab has sold over 750,000 units and three million euros of business by 2022. To do this, he has assembled a team of over 40 professionals, who work in a network spanning multiple countries (although the company’s headquarters and address are next to Seville’s Santa Clara neighborhood).

Odders Lab is now experiencing an accelerated growth process. “Right now our priority is gave us the professionals and skills that allowed us to move forward in a fast moving sector”, said Ana Molina, the company’s CEO.

Throughout this financial year, the three projects that have been launched will evolve and will present new developments (the characteristics and themes of which have yet to be disclosed), and which will be a definite boost for the company. Despite everything, the Sevillian entrepreneur remembers that his priority is to attract talent that will allow them to keep up with the pace imposed by the development of virtual reality itself. «You have to make games with quality and in less than a year, if you are any longer, you run the risk of being born out of date because we are dealing with new technologies in permanent innovation; That’s why now the aim is to prepare the team to be the spearhead.

Origin

Weird Lab born in full confinement and their team is used to networking remotely. “It is one of our assets to recruit senior professionals in any country,” he said. The company’s origins are in groups of entrepreneurs who have forged hardware designs and internet of things companies, such as oblumi (which launches an infrared thermometer connected to the phone). “Our partners had experience in developing virtual reality products, they detected that it was in full expansion, and during the lockdown we refocused all our capabilities to enter this business,” recalls Molina.

Weird Laboratory starting with four employees, a number that has been multiplied by ten. “We managed to position ourselves as an international studio with good projections,” concluded Molina.
