Olympic Winter Games, Politics | China: US will bear the consequences of political boycott of Winter Olympics

China’s Foreign Ministry said the boycott would have consequences.

– US attempts to interfere in the Winter Olympics in Beijing based on ideological prejudice based on lies and rumors will only reveal their evil intentions, spokesman Zhao Lijian said and called on the US to “stop politicizing sports”.

China also said that “the US will bear the consequences for its mistakes”.

On Monday, it became known that no official American representative would be present at the Olympics in February. The diplomatic boycott was primarily caused by China’s treatment of the Uighur minority in the country’s western province of Xinjiang.

– We are fully committed to fighting for human rights both at home and abroad, and we are confident in our cause, said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

The US has not called for an athlete boycott of the Winter Olympics, which run from February 4 to 20.

There is no boycott of Norway

The UK and Australia have also signaled that a diplomatic boycott may be relevant. Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap) said that the Norwegian boycott was irrelevant.

“There is a long tradition of the Norwegian government being present at the Olympics and Paralympics, as a guest of the Norwegian Sports Confederation,” Huitfeldt wrote in comments to NTB.

Uyghurs are a group of Turko-Tatar Muslim people who live mostly in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in northwestern China. The country is accused of committing serious violations against the Uighur people, but denies committing human rights violations.
