Pakistani Court Overturns Corruption Convictions Against Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

MADRID, November 29. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A court in Pakistan this Wednesday overturned the corruption conviction of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, brother of the current president, Shehbaz Sharif, which could open the door to his return to political life.

Azam Nazir Tarar, Sharif’s lead lawyer, had indicated in statements to the media that the High Court of Islamabad, the capital, had acquitted the former president, who in 2017 was removed from office by the Supreme Court for not disclosing part of his salary. from his son’s company. He was later sentenced to ten years in prison in two separate cases for failing to disclose his sources of income.

Sharif, who was sentenced to seven years in prison in December 2018 for another corruption case, received medical clearance to leave prison in October 2019 and a month later he obtained permission to travel to the UK to receive medical treatment for four weeks, although he has since refused to return to Pakistan until last month, when he appealed to the court.

Now, his lawyer indicated that the withdrawal of the sentence against him stems from a lack of evidence on the part of the prosecution, according to information gathered by the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’.

Pakistani law prohibits convicts from running for elections, so the court’s decision clears Sharif’s political path, which still has a second appeal to resolve.

His predecessor and main political rival, Imran Khan, was removed by Parliament during a vote of no confidence in 2022 and is currently imprisoned on similar corruption charges. The country will hold elections in February.
