At the age of eight he began studying and playing the piano at a classical music school with classes from 8 am to 5 pm. At a young age, musicians have been practicing for days. “A teacher wanted to take me out of school, he told me that I was wasting his time and that I will never be a musician», said Fonseca, who found motivation in the words of his teacher. He began composing at the age of 14, inspired by his roots, in Afro-Cuban music. His performance at the Havana International Jazz Festival at his home only 15 years oldwhere he was a major revelation, catapulting him to fame and a musical education that ended with a degree in music composition at the Higher Institute of Arts.

In 2001 he joined Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer’s orchestra for a world tour recording more than 400 shows worldwide: Europe, UK, South America, Australia and Asia welcome this talented group. Conducted by Ferrer (a pupil of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club), touring with the Orchestra placed Fonseca alongside such luminaries as Cachaíto López, Guajiro Mirabal and Manuel Galbán. This marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with several members of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Over the years, Fonseca established himself as a bridge between traditional Cuban music and the sounds of the new era. Artist specializing in piano, although he plays everything related to percussion and a little bass. “I don’t exclude myself in any style because if I call myself an artist of just one genre, I exclude myself,” says the pianist. “Besides mastering the piano, my concerts are also about having fun. Sometimes to the public you need to relax and I’m looking for that, so that they enjoy it. The Cuban musician, with extraordinary charisma, presents a performance in which he seeks to interact with the audience so that the audience stands up and, whoever is encouraged, dances and enjoys it.

“The experience with Dolby was very impressive. They create the magic of teleportation so that when you listen to music it is as if you are recording in a studio. I hope I can continue to do this in my next album,” said the pianist. The musical landscape has changed over time, and listening to Fonseca’s albums with this technology produces a unique feeling which makes people vibrate as if they were in the artist’s own studio.
