This was confirmed by the European Football Association (UEFA) after an urgent board meeting on Friday.
Thus, the situation in Ukraine will have an impact on the match which will take place on 28 May. The final was supposed to take place at St. Petersburg, but has now been added to the Stade de France instead. The arena is located in Saint-Denis, north of Paris.
“Uefa would like to thank French President Emmanuel Macron for his personal support and commitment to moving the most prestigious match of European club football to France in a time of unprecedented crisis,” it said in a statement.
Moving matches
The UEFA Council has also decided to move matches in European club tournaments involving Russian and Ukrainian teams. It will in the future be played on neutral courts. This is especially true for Spartak Moscow’s upcoming home game in the Europa League.
The Russian national team are scheduled to host Poland for a World Cup qualifier in Moscow on March 24. The International Football Association (Fifa) has yet to comment on what will happen with this match.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed the upcoming football game when he spoke about the Ukraine case earlier this week.
– It is important that President Putin at this critical moment understands that what he is doing will be disastrous for Russia. He will end up with a poorer country as a result of the sanctions the world will impose. A more isolated Russia, which would have no chance of hosting a football event, he said.
New meeting
British Sports Minister Nadine Dorries also believes that something has to be done with the Champions League final.
– I have serious concerns about sporting events that will be held in Russia, such as the Champions League final and will be discussing with the relevant regulatory bodies. “We will not allow President Putin to exploit world events to legitimize his illegal invasion of Ukraine,” he said.
The UEFA Council stated that regular extraordinary council meetings would be held in the future as a result of the situation in Ukraine.
