President Duque meets British businessman | Government | Economy

After conversations with British businessmen and investors, President Ivan Duque said this Thursday that “Colombia ready and open for business”, hours after formalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the UK government.

“We met businessmen from the UK and explained why Colombia is one of the most attractive countries to invest in Latin America: higher economic growth in the region, we reduce poverty, we lead the energy transition and fight the climate crisis.”, said the president in his remarks.

President Duque stressed that the country now has stronger regulations than before, which facilitates investment.

“It is clear that the conditions for investing in this country are the best and, for this reason, we are telling British entrepreneurs that Colombia should be their number one choice in Latin America, knowing that at the moment the UK is Europe’s number one investor in our country.”.

According to government data, In Colombia, non-mining and energy foreign direct investment has grown by almost 200% in the last 4 years.

The president defended the trade agreement and said that renegotiating the FTA is “unprecedented stupidity” after several presidential candidates declared their intention to renegotiate the country’s trade agreements.
