Queretaro; great potential in circular economy endeavors

According to Luis Fernández Carril, Sustainability and Climate Change coordinator at Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), stated that the state of Querétaro has a great opportunity at the national level to stand out in endeavors in the fields of science, technology and sustainability in the circular economybecause these are probably the only entities that have laws in this area.

He explained that The Royal Foundation, a global initiative led by Prince William, announced the commencement of calls to submit nominations for The Earthshot Prize 2023, the world’s most prestigious environmental award to be recognized with £5 million up to five initiatives that propose solutions to environmental problems facing the planet.

This contest, as in previous editions, is divided into the following categories: protecting and restoring nature; purify the air; revive the oceans; creating a world without waste and improving the climate.

Winners, in addition to receiving £1 million each, will have access to a range of resources, including personal support for scale the solutions presented to achieve greater impact.

To be the creditor of the award, which reached its third edition, solutions from individuals, communities, businesses or organizations that are making real progress will be considered regarding the available categories, and must be outside the idea phase; This means they must be initiatives that already provide solutions and need support to expand their impact over the next five years.

He recalled that Mexico and many areas of the country, especially desert or semi-desert areas, such as the Bajío region (Aguas Calientes, Querétaro, Jalisco, Guanajuato, SLP, Zacatecas and Michoacán) have serious environmental problemswith less rain, heatwaves, rising temperatures, poor air quality, and unexpected flooding in low-lying areas.

For the third time in a row, Tecnológico de Monterrey will be the only Mexican institution to be part of the award as the Official Nominator, thereby bringing together more than 300 organizations from around the world are invited to submit nominations.

In the case of Mexico, he adds that in previous editions, several people participated 40 ongoing projects and it is hoped that this edition will be similar.
