On Thursday morning, the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree, in northern England, was found fallen.
Police have now arrested a 16-year-old boy, suspected of causing criminal damage in connection with the tree felling, according to Guard.
The maple tree, which stands beside Hadrian’s Wall, is the most photographed tree in all of England, according to AFP.
This tree, which is estimated to be around 300 years old, became world famous when it appeared in the 1991 feature film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”.
Northumbria Police said they believed the vandalism was a deliberate act.
– This is a world-famous landmark and today’s events have caused shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community, said Kevin Waring, of the local police.
Waring said, after the vandalism, an immediate investigation was carried out, where this afternoon they arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.
– This is still the initial stage of the investigation, so we are keeping all possibilities open. I am asking members of the public who have seen or heard something that may be of interest to us to contact us.
The 16-year-old was detained by police and is cooperating with police.
The Mayor of North Tyne, Jamie Driscoll, visited the fallen tree on Thursday. He admitted that he had difficulty expressing his anger.
– People have scattered his ashes there. People have applied here. I once had a picnic there with my wife and children. It is part of our collective soul. We have to find out who did this.
Hadrian’s Wall at one time marked the northwestern border of the Roman Empire and was located just south of England’s border with Scotland.
