Recent pictures show a queen in a good mood

Compared to this summer, Queen Elizabeth is clearly weakened, but offers plenty of smiles as she welcomes upcoming Prime Minister Liz Truss to Balmoral, says photographer Jane Barlow. Two days later, the 96-year-old king died. Photo: Jane Barlow / PA / AP / NTB

Culture and entertainment: Jane Barlow of the PA news agency was sent to Balmoral to photograph the Queen as she received Liz Truss in audience on Tuesday and commissioned her to form a government as Britain’s new Prime Minister.

While they waited for the newly elected Conservative Party leader, Barlow took the opportunity to snap several portraits of the 96-year-old monarch. They also talked about the weather, as is the case when English people meet.

– He smiled at me, and he greeted Truss with a big smile, said Barlow. She said she had received a lot of feedback on the photo, which was Elizabeth’s last official photo.

– It is an honor and privilege to take that picture. That applies to many of our tasks, the photographer said.

– I was there to take pictures of her meeting with the new prime minister, but for me it was the best pictures of the queen herself. And of course it becomes much more significant in retrospect, says Barlow.

– He looks a lot weaker than when I photographed him this summer.
