Spanish operator Aena begins management of Congonhas-São Paulo airport, Brazil’s second busiest airport

Airport manager Aena, through its subsidiary Aena Desarrollo Internacional, started managing Congonhas-São Paulo Airport this Tuesday, the second busiest airport in Brazil, with 22.8 million passengers in 2019.

Congonhas Airport is located in the State of São Paulo, with an area of ​​248,219 square kilometers, about 50% of Spain, with a population of 46.3 million, the same as Spain or Argentina, twice as large as Chile or four times as large. from Portugal.

São Paulo is the largest financial center in Latin America and Brazil, the largest economy on the continent and ninth in the world.

Aena won the concession for Block Eleven Airports in Brazil located in four states (São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Pará) for a period of 30 years, with the possibility of another five years, at a public auction in August 2022.

This group of eleven airports recorded a total of 26.8 million passengers in 2019, 12% of the country’s air traffic for that year, with Congonhas-São Paulo being the airport with the highest traffic.

Apart from Congonhas airport, Campo Grande and Uberlândia airports have been effectively included since last week in the Spanish airport management network. Aena has employed a total of 450 professionals at these airports to assist with their management and operations.

AENA’S LARGEST INTERNATIONAL OPERATION

The 11-airport group concession is the largest international operation in the history of Aena, which, under the Aena Brazil brand, has managed six other airports in the North East of the country since 2020 and has a presence in the UK, where it manages 51% of London-Luton airport, as well as in Mexico, Colombia, and Jamaica.

“This is Aena’s biggest international milestone. A project that is technically very complex and can only be handled by the best professionals in the world of aviation, namely Aena,” emphasized Aena’s president and CEO, Maurici Lucena.

Aena Brasil is involved in an ambitious investment plan to improve North East infrastructure connectivity and, with the integration of these airports, Aena Brasil will lead the largest concessionary airport network in Brazil.
