Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was in Hiroshima, Japan on Sunday, where he has held meetings, among others, with US President Joe Biden.
After the meeting, the Ukrainian president will give an update on the bloody battle that took place in Bakhmut.
On Saturday, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed they had full control of the city, which Zelenskyi denied.
– Bakhmut was demolished, said the president, adding that not much remained of the city.
– You must understand that there is nothing there. They destroyed everything, he said before meeting with Biden.
When asked if he believed Bakhmut was still in Ukrainian hands or if Russian troops had taken over the town, he replied:
– I do not believe.
The president is also said to have commented on whether the city is now only “in our hearts”.
Zelenskyj’s answer has caused complete confusion, because for a long time it was not clear which question the president was answering.
Just after 9:00 a.m., a spokesman for Zelenskyj reported that the president did not intend to confirm that Bakhmut had been taken over by Russian forces, according to Reuters.
