British Medicine is taking a step forward by exploring augmented reality technology in healthcare. Surgeons in London successfully performed spinal surgery using Apple’s virtual reality (VR) glasses for the first time in the UK.

Equipped with Apple Vision Pro headphones costing £2,700 (around 13,500,000 Colombian pesos), the medical team continued the operation at Cromwell Hospital in London.

This innovative technology allows surgeons and medical teams to have better vision during interventions. However, it is not the surgeon who uses it but rather an instrumentalist who is present during the operation and works closely with the surgeon, using the device to prepare, follow the procedure, and select the appropriate tools.

Suvi Verho, chief nurse at London Independent Hospital, expressed her admiration for the technology, calling it a “game changer”. Professionals point out that glasses “Eliminate human error. This eliminates the guesswork. This gives you confidence in going into surgery,” Verho said according to the Daily Mail.

The operation, carried out by surgeon Syed Aftab two weeks ago, was the first application of this technology in medicine in the UK.

According to Aftab, he highlighted that this technology will “super-improve” the skills of his staff, as it will be able to turn a novice nurse into someone with ten years of experience, as he told the British media.

This was achieved after the UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, urged that the country’s National Health Service adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in medical practice.
