The British Home Secretary has resigned – Dagsavisen

IN resignation letter Braverman wrote that earlier on Wednesday he sent a public document from his private e-mail account, which was a violation of the rules.

This is described as a background departure. But Braverman also made sharp criticism of the government’s political direction.

He believes the Truss government has reneged on promises made to voters and is doing too little to prevent illegal immigration.

The weeks were full of turmoil

Truss took over as Prime Minister in early September, and has experienced much political turmoil since then.

Now Braverman’s departure is contributing to “further chaos for the prime minister this week”, writes the BBC’s political reporter Ione Wells.

In stark contrast to Wednesday’s developments, Wells believes the government has an “urgent need to demonstrate unity and stability”.

The opposition Labor Party also believes the situation is chaotic. The government is “falling apart”, claimed Labor leader Yvette Cooper.

– This is not the way to run a government, he said of the second minister’s departure in less than a week.

U-turn

Suella Braverman has previously spoken critically of the U-turn made by Prime Minister Liz Truss when she reversed several announced tax cuts. He had to change course after the planned tax cuts sparked a strong and negative reaction in financial markets.

This situation also led Truss to fire Minister of Finance Kwasi Kwarteng last week.

The political turmoil led to speculation that Truss would be forced to resign by his own party comrades.

Fresh opinion poll among Conservative Party members, 55 percent said the Prime Minister should resign.

– Take responsibility

– To pretend that we have done nothing wrong, to continue as if not everyone can see that we have made a mistake, and hope that everything will miraculously be right – that is not serious politics, Braverman wrote in his resignation letter.

– I have made a mistake; I am responsible; I’m leaving, he added.

The BBC’s Ione Wells thinks this sounds like a call on Prime Minister Liz Truss to do the same.

In the British media, there has been speculation whether former transport minister Grant Shapps will take over as home secretary.

Suella Braverman belongs to the right wing of the Conservative Party. According to the BBC, it has been 188 years since the last time the British Home Secretary served for such a brief period.
