The intersection outside the Russian embassy will become a “Ukrainian place” – Dagsavisen

The district committee said not to rename the Drammensveien section to Ukraines vei, but decided on Tuesday to give a new name to the crossing outside the embassy, reports after post.

It does not involve a change of address, but is referred to as an informal degree at the junction. An information sign could be posted stating that the place had been given this name, Aftenposten wrote.

The city council unanimously supports this.

Clear sign

– It’s amazing. Now we have a clear and distinct sign, Frogner district committee chairman Jens Jørgen Lie told Avisa Oslo.

– This is the least bureaucratic and most flexible way to do it, says Lie.

The proposal was put forward in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The MDG group leader on the city committee, Maja Karoline Rynning, called the proposal a “small, albeit symbolic, important action.”

– We are very happy! There’s a bit of international politics involving city politicians, but it’s a good move and a symbolically important one, Rynning told Avisa Oslo.

Follow the rules

It was the MDGs who first suggested that the Drammensveien from Solli Plass to Bygdøy street should be called the gate of Ukraines.

This means the 1.5 kilometer Drammensveien – between Skillebekk and Skarpsno – will be renamed. If this has been adopted, the address of the Russian embassy will change.

The regulations state that it can only be done if the existing name carries a “significant practical disadvantage”. As such, changing the entire Drammensveien would be against the rules, according to the administration in the district.

Therefore, the Conservatives and the MDGs agreed to just give the intersection a name.
