Ingvar Ambjørnsen awarded the honorary prize at the Brage awards ceremony
Author Ingvar Ambjørnsen has been awarded the Brage Honorary Prize.
Due to his failing health, it was Ambjørnsen’s wife, Gabriele Haefs, who traveled from the couple’s home in Hamburg to accept the honorary award on Ambjørnsen’s behalf. The two have lived together in Germany since 1985.
Labels such as solidarity, vulnerability, counterculture, loneliness, critique of the system, and freedom of prejudice should not be overlooked in the description of the author’s literary production, the jury wrote.
“Through his long journey as a writer, he has developed a rich and varied body of writing with a number of successful publications for children, youth and adult readers. The author is perhaps best known for his iconic novels, some of which have been dramatized and filmed, but has also proven to be an outstanding essayist and can safely be placed in the upper echelon of contemporary Norwegian short story art.
The person has also won most of the Norwegian literary awards one can win, including (the most) the Brage prize in 1995.
“The 2023 Brage honorary prize is awarded to one of our most significant writers who for almost 50 years has contributed to the desire to read and the joy of reading throughout the Norwegian population: Congratulations, Ingvar Ambjørnsen,” the Brage award said.
