San Juan.- Puerto Rican legislator José Meléndez Ortiz, of the ruling New Progressive Party, will present a bill this Monday that would ban the use of TikTok in the island’s three branches of government: legislative, executive, and judicial.

“Given the many incidents and irregularities related to the use of the social network TikTok, tomorrow I will present a bill that will prohibit the use of the application in the three-branch system of government: legislative, executive and judicial”said Meléndez on his Facebook account.

The representative stated that currently 27 states in the United States have banned the use of social networks on all equipment and systems operated by the government.

“In fact, the use of this platform is prohibited in the federal government system from December 2022”he assured.

“Risks to the security of the data stored there, as well as users’ personal information and indiscriminate use of this network are the reasons. prohibition“, he explained.

He further said that in 2017, China passed the law forcing the companysuch as BayteDance China -owner of TikTok-, to exchange data with the Chinese government on intelligence matters, which even includes user information and content.

Seeing this, he reminded “The Puerto Rican government’s cybernetic infrastructure, which has suffered a series of attacks like those in other jurisdictions, could also come under the rule of Chinese communist law.”.
