Masked man beats former minister in Greece
Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was attacked on Friday night by a group of hooded men.
The attack took place in Athens while Varoufakis was eating in the Exarchia district. A group of about 20 people saw him from the street before they burst in and started attacking him, according to the report Kathimerini.
According to Greek media, he was thrown to the ground, kicked and punched in the face.
The attackers also shouted abuse and accused him of signing deals with international lenders, which forced the state to implement massive budget cuts and privatize state enterprises.
Varoufakis, who is left-leaning and became finance minister during the financial crisis nearly a decade ago, broke his nose and was taken to hospital.
In a Twitter message, he thanked her for the statements of support he received after the attack. He also dismissed reports that the attackers were left-wing radicals.
– They are not anarchists, leftists, communists or members of any movement, wrote Varoufakis.
He instead accuses them of being crooks who spread the lie that during the financial crisis he sold Greece to international lenders.
– We won’t let them divide us. In the future, write further.
Varoufakis’ MeRA25 party called the attack “fascist”. He now sits as a representative in the Greek National Assembly.
