UK approves purchase of iRobot by Amazon, maker of Roomba

British competition regulator has approved the purchase of iRobot, manufacturer of the popular Roomba robot vacuum cleaner, by Amazon for 1,700 million dollars (about 1,660 million euros). Manufacturers were up nearly 23% in the pre-open on Wall Street.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CAM) has emphasized the deal it would not pose a competition problem in the UK.

It should be recalled that last April, CMA had launched a “Phase 1” investigation into the deal announced in August last year when Amazon was looking to expand its smart home device lineup, including Alexa voice assistant, smart thermostat, security device, wall-mounted smart screen, and a robot dog named Astro.

For its part, an Amazon spokesperson has detailed Reuters that “we are satisfied with the decision of the UK Competition and Markets Authority and We are committed to supporting regulators in their work.”

“We expect similar decisions from other regulators soon,” he said regarding the US Federal Trade Commission’s investigation.
