He Felixstowe Harbour accepted six semi-automatic and electric RTG cranes with remote control from Konecranes Finland. This is the first delivery of an order for 17 cranes.

Robert Ashton, Director of Operations at Felixstowe Harbor, indicated that “the delivery of this latest equipment is further proof of our commitment to providing our customers with reliable, high-quality service, while decarbonizing our operations. The use of remote control and automated technologies improves service efficiency and predictability. More importantly, it provides better and safer working conditions for our team members.”

The new crane was dismantled at the port’s Trinity Terminal before being transferred to Piers 8 and 9 where it will be based. Each will go through a brief commissioning process before entering service.

RTG is capable of lifting containers with a height of 1 by 6 and a span of 7 rows plus a carriageway. Operation of the crane is fully automated, with the exception of lifting to or from the transport vehicle, which is carried out by remote control by an operator located in the central control room.

The latest crane deliveries follow news earlier in the week that the Port of Felixstowe ordered 100 battery-powered autonomous trucks from Shanghai Westwell Technology.

Hutchison Ports has announced that its three ports in England, Felixstowe, Harwich International and London Thamesport, achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035.
