The German Air Force had reported this Wednesday that several Russian warplanes had been intercepted in international airspace over the Baltic Sea amid rising tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The reconnaissance aircraft has been intercepted. German and British Eurofighter fighters have identified three Russian military aircraft,” the German Air Force said in a Twitter message.
As such, it has been determined that it is about two SU-27 and IL-20 fighters, all Russian, and has released several images of the aircraft. “This Russian aircraft once again flew over an area with no transponder signal,” he explained.
Countries such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, also members of NATO, do not have their own combat aircraft, so the military alliance has been tasked with ensuring airspace security over northeastern Europe since 2004.
The Allies generally deployed fighter and other aircraft over the Baltic, over countries bordering Russia, and intercepted military and civilian aircraft that did not respect international aviation regulations.
In early April, the German Army left the NATO airspace surveillance mission in British hands, although it continued to provide support to the British Air Force.
