Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reports that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, appointed Argentine economists Mario Cimoli, as Acting Executive Secretary from April 1, 2022 and until further notice.
In a statement, ECLAC stated that Mario Cimoli will replace Mexican diplomat Alicia Bárcena, who on March 31 ended almost 14 years of leadership as chairman of the regional commission.
Mario Cimoli He has a doctorate from the University of Sussex in England. and is a full professor of Political Economy at Ca Foscari University of Venice in Italy, He has a history of more than 20 years working at the United Nations and ECLAC.
At ECLAC, he served as Economic Affairs Officer of the Productive and Business Development Division (1999-2009), Head of the Digital Innovation and Technology Unit of the same Division (2009-2010), Director of the Productive and Business Development Division (2010-2018) and The official in charge of the International Trade and Integration Division (2015-2020).
In his experience as a teacher, he has extensive experience as a Visiting Professor and Researcher in various academic institutions such as the University of Udine, Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico (OW)University of Pisa, University of Pavia and General Sarmiento National University.
Cimoli has an extensive publication record reflecting substantial contributions to the field of micro and macroeconomic policywith a focus on development paths, economic growth, and the linkages between industrial policy, technology development, and innovation.
As well is co-director of the Working Group on Industrial Policy and Intellectual Property Rights for Developmentwith Giovanni Dosi and Joseph E. Stiglitz of Columbia University (2004-present).
