Venezuela invited Guyana to continue “political negotiations” in Essequibo

The Venezuelan government invited Guyana on Friday to “continue political negotiations” over the territorial conflict between the two countries over Essequibo.

On the occasion of the 57th anniversary of the independence of the neighboring country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela issued a statement in which “Venezuela reiterates its cordial invitation to the Government of Guyana to continue the path of political negotiations regarding the controversy over the territory of Guayana. Esequiba, as stipulated in the Geneva Agreement signed on 17 February 1996”.

ICJ’s decision on the dispute

In early April, Venezuela celebrated an incidental decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by admitting that the illegal and fraudulent conduct of the United Kingdom could be reviewed, and secondly because it made clear its existence and validity. Geneva Agreement of 1966.

In June and November 2022, the Republic demonstrated with “rigorous, robust and abundant documentation, deception mechanisms” used by the United Kingdom to seize the Guayana Esequiba region from Venezuela, a statement said.

Subsequently, London signed and committed to Venezuela in the Treaty of Geneva in 1966 to find a practical and mutually satisfactory solution to the territorial dispute. Based on this instrument, the state demands a negotiated solution.

It should be noted that Venezuela does not recognize a judicial mechanism as a means of resolving the above-mentioned controversy, as it does not include the nature and purpose of this agreement.
