The city of Palm Desert, in the Coachella Valley, in the State of California, will be the next location for a new surf beach. The company responsible for implementing this project is a Basque company: Wavegarden. The group has the technology needed to build wave pools for surfing in places far from the coast. Wavegarden was founded in 2005 when Basque engineer Josema Odriozola and German sports economist Karin Frisch decided to combine their love of surfing with their experience designing and building sports facilities, particularly skate parks.
Living near the sea, they always think that the best sports facility is a simple beach with good waves. The goal is clear:
Develop the best wave generation technology; recreate the sensation and experience of surfing the sea; providing ideal conditions for all, especially in areas far from the coast; improve sea conditions when unfavorable or dangerous such as poor wave quality, too many people, currents and other natural hazards.
Ten years ago, this type of wave-making technology did not exist and there is no precedent to follow.
DSRT Surf in California will be one of the first Wavegarden Cove powered surf parks in the United States. This unique project went well with administrative procedures, thanks to the unanimous approval of the Palm Desert City Council, in the Coachella Valley. The surf lagoon will have a 52-module wave generator from the Basque company, similar to the one at Praia da Grama, and its inauguration is expected in late 2023.
DSRT Surf applies an innovative management model so that this project does not involve increasing water consumption. The surf park will be built on 20 hectares of land currently occupied by golf holes in the area, so with this bartering water consumption is even lower than before, the Spanish company explained.
This is not the only project he has. A month ago, the group signed an alliance with British group The Wave to develop a minimum of 6 projects in the UK and Ireland. The Wave, which opened its first Wavegarden in Bristol in 2019, is already developing its second surf park, located at Lee Valley Regional Park in London. In addition, the company is constantly looking for new land to develop the remainder of the project, not only in Ireland and the UK, but also in Europe.
