A British cruise ship ran into a storm in Spain’s northern Bay of Biscay on Saturday. Passengers are now telling of the horrific moments they feared for their lives.
About 100 people were injured as a result of the storm, and five people had to be hospitalized.
The ship was on its way to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria when a sudden storm came. They turned around and headed back to England when the ship’s propulsion system activated in bad weather
This caused the ship to turn sharply to the left – before suddenly coming to a complete stop.
Jan Bendall (75) was on board with her husband. He told BBC that they were in the room when they heard the captain’s voice over the public address system. He asked them to sit or lie down.
After the ship stopped, they were trapped for fifteen hours in the storm, according to Bendall.
– We are holding on for dear life, he told the channel and added:
– That’s pretty scary. I’m not one to get scared easily, but that was pretty dramatic.
She went on to say that she and her husband were good with bones, and therefore they were lucky.
– I think many elderly people are very worried, he added.
Passengers: Fear for their lives
There were about 1,000 people on board the ship, which set sail on October 24 for a 14-day cruise around the Canary Islands. One of the passengers on the plane spoke up BBC which some feared for their lives.
– People send messages to their loved ones if the boat capsizes, the passenger told the channel.
The Saga cruise company described most of the injuries as “not very serious”. Passengers took this as an insult.
– Several elderly people on board had serious pelvic and bone fractures, and some had lacerations that required stitches.
Other passengers have stated so Independent that they “endured a hard life.”
– The ship is safe
Cruise ship, the so-called Spirit of Discovery and built in 2019, returned to port in the English city of Portsmouth on Monday evening, but Saga Cruises has not confirmed whether there were any injuries requiring further medical treatment on land.
– The ship was safe all the time, however due to the storm some guests were injured. They received immediate medical care on board, a statement from the company said.
