“The modern world is coming to Downton”, comments, between ironic and hopeful, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in the trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Erathe second film in the successful series made by Julian Felloweswho is driving Simon Curtis (See you Christopher Robin).
Indeed, in the country house of Downton Abbey, in the borough of Yorkshire, a filmmaker is set up, played by Hugh Danceto shoot a movie, and with it another new character is combined which embodies Dominic West (looks a lot like the icon David Niven), Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye you Jonathan Zaccaï.
To Butler Charles Carson (Jim Carter) didn’t excite him much about modernity: “Feature films, in Downton?”, he asked. Her perception is more in tune with that of Violet Crawley, the Widow of the Countess of Grantham she plays. Dame Maggie Smith: “I think the best thing about movies is that you can’t hear them,” he said, referring to the era of silent films. “It would be better if they couldn’t meet either!”
Metacinema is in the middle Downton Abbey: A New Era and Violet, whose mysterious legacy of a villa in the south of France sets in motion the plot: there was an unknown man in her past, and his story looms now that he’s left the property for her. “They spent a few days together and he gave her a home”, Isobel Crawley was offended (Penelope Wilton). Not only is Violet alive and well, despite the speculation that fueled the first film, but she’s hiding a high-voltage secret.
The new film, due for release on April 29 in the UK and on May 20 in the United States, brings together many of the original cast: Hugh Bonneville as Lord Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham; Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith and Phyllis Logan as housekeeper Elsie Hughes. Another name that fans of the series are familiar with is Joanne Froggatt, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Lesley Nicol e Imelda Staunton.
The screenplay will be written by Fellowes (who won an Oscar in that category for death in the middle of the night and is currently enjoying another success, Golden AgeHBO Max series) in collaboration with Gareth Neame you Liz Trubridge. Production belongs to the three of them.
“This film is truly a new era,” Fellowes explained to People in November 2021. “The further the 1920s progressed, the more the world changed, and in many ways. Everything from entertainment to transportation was completely different in the late twenties. That’s what we mean.”
After six seasons (2010-2015), Downton Abbey has its first film in 2019 and leaves audiences wanting more stories about the Crawley family.
