Cookies represent a multimillion-dollar fine for Google
Cookies continue to be a problematic issue for companies. A few weeks ago, Google was fined $170 million in France for failing to respect the country’s cookie permission rules.
According to the French data protection authority, the tech giant is using a pattern to try to force the consent of cookies, explaining that users must click the “Accept cookies” button, but it doesn’t indicate an option to reject them or manage them.
According to the committee, the proposed method of collecting consent to users, as well as the lack of clarity of the information provided to them, constitutes a violation of article 82 of the French Data Protection Act.
On the other hand, in the United States, the company was sued for its tracking practices, which, according to Washington Attorney General Karl Racine, invaded users’ privacy.
“Google mistakenly led consumers to believe that changing their account and device settings would allow customers to protect their privacy and control what personal data the company had access to,” Racine said.
