Boris Johnson’s new job, away from politics

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson signed up as a columnist for Daily mail, having left the British Parliament. “We are pleased to announce Boris Johnson as our new columnist. Renowned as one of the most witty and original writers in the business, Boris’ column will appear in Daily mail every Saturday,” the paper said on its Twitter account.

The announcement was accompanied by a clip of the former head of government seen running near his country house in Oxfordshire, in central England, or appear in the House of Commons while he is in power -between 2019 and 2022-. However, as revealed today by the parliamentary advisory committee on business appointments (Acoba) -the regulatory body-, Johnson committed a “clear breach” of parliamentary regulations by reporting 30 minutes before his signature by the tabloids was publicly announced without giving the committee time to advise.

“The Ministerial Code stipulates that the minister must ensure that there is noneor new appointments announced before the committee can give its advicesaid a spokesperson for the advisory committee. He added that “an application received 30 minutes before the appointment was announced is a clear violation (of the ministerial code).”

“We have written to Boris Johnson seeking clarification and will publish correspondence in due course, in line with our transparency policy,” he said.

tabloids, close to the Conservative Partymade the announcement a day after the House Privileges Committee concluded in a report that the former “Tory” leader deliberately misled Parliament about what he knew about “partygates,” the street parties of Downing’s official residence during the pandemic.

The commission recommended that Johnson be suspended from the Commons for a term of 90 days, although that sentence will not be enforced because the politician decided to resign as deputy a week ago. Johnson described the report as “rubbish” and said Thursday was a “terrible day” for democracy.
