In the week of April 6 to 10 this year, 18,500 deaths were recorded in the UK, 8,000 more than usual, reports BBC.

The coronavirus is one cause of this increase, but deaths from other causes are also increasing.

This may give reason to assume that community lockdowns have had a direct impact on public health, writes the BBC.

The British healthcare system, the NHS, shows in its analysis that the number of deaths in hospitals has decreased since April 8, if you look at the date of death.

The figures the government publishes each day are based on the time a death was reported, not when the death actually occurred.

Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter from the University of Cambridge said the NHS figures showed the country was already stretched thin.

– Judging by the experience in Italy, this may be a long-term process, he told the BBC.

The death rate is higher

However, statistics on deaths in care homes in England and Wales show a much higher death toll in England related to the coronavirus than the daily death toll stated by the authorities.

1,043 people have lost their lives in connection with coronavirus infections in care homes in England, while more than 500 people have lost their lives in assisted living or private homes, estimates the UK Bureau of Statistics.

Because the government’s official coronavirus death toll is based only on hospital deaths, the actual death toll is higher.

The government announced on Tuesday that 17,337 people had lost their lives in connection with coronavirus infections.
