British Home Secretary creates a new controversy because of traffic violations

MADRID, May 22. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

The UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has been embroiled in fresh controversy in recent hours over alleged breaches of the ministerial code of conduct by trying to circumvent a traffic training course after crossing the speed limit last summer, though for now the Government is avoiding talk of possible sackings or resignations. themselves, as the opposition has demanded.

Braverman alleged this Monday, in a statement to Sky News, that “nothing was inappropriate”, while the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, limited himself to requesting an ethics report on the case, having tiptoed at the end of the G7 meeting in Japan, claiming he had not know all the details.

Downing Street insists that Sunak “absolutely” backed his minister, who even resigned from the Liz Truss Government, alleging the alleged mistransmission of official information. The immigration reform being finalized by the Executive, with steps such as the one considering deportation to Rwanda, has made Braverman one of the most questionable figures in the cabinet.

The most recent controversy, revealed by the ‘Sunday Times’, goes back to the summer of 2022, when Braverman broke the speed limit on the outskirts of London. To avoid paying fines, the administration proposed a training course for drivers, but the minister, who at the time was Britain’s Attorney General, tried to agree to tailor-made private classes to avoid public exposure.

At first, he tried it himself, but after the first refusal, he assigned a counselor to intervene. Braverman ended up paying the fine and forfeiting the corresponding card points, as he himself recalled in his first public statement about the case, in which he said he was “focused” on fulfilling his current political job.

Labor leader Keir Starmer otherwise believed that something “inappropriate” did occur, for which reason he called for a “full investigation”. “The usual consequence of violating the ministerial code is leaving,” suggested the main opposition representative, according to the BBC.
