Driving on the track improves mood more than the gym, according to Abarth

A Loughborough and Abarth University trial found that track driving improves mood more than just exercising in the gym

Loughborough University, the world’s leading university of sports science, and performance car brand Abarth have revealed that driving on a race track significantly improves one’s mood compared to working out in the gym.

The positive emotional benefits of physical exercise are known, but the psychological effects of track driving are less well documented.

Therefore, the Circuit Training Atmosphere Test was assigned to explore the different emotional responses between working out in the gym and driving on a race track.

Driving on the track improves mood more than the gym, according to Abarth

findings

It found that, on average, people were 59% happier when riding the Abarth on the race track compared to working out at the gym.

Breaking down the findings by exercise type, happiness levels were found to be 116% higher when participants were driving than when they were doing cardio.

Interestingly, there was only a slight difference in mood (4%) between track driving and a weight training session.

Meanwhile, it was found that people were 20% happier completing a precision driving circuit compared to a gym workout consisting of cardio and weight sessions, and 63% happier compared to cardio alone.

In addition, the experiment looked at how being a passenger on fast laps affected enjoyment levels.

It found that jumping in the passenger seat next to a professional driver was on average 77% more enjoyable than a combined workout consisting of cardio and resistance training.

Going deeper into the details, sitting in the passenger seat is 141% more enjoyable than a cardio workout. Plus, it improves mood 16% more than resistance training, highlighting that the mood benefits aren’t just limited to the driver’s seat.

Abarth and Loughborough University also found that, in terms of exercise, mood was more affected by participating in weight training than aerobic exercise. The results showed that feelings of happiness were 108% higher when lifting weights during a cardio session.

How the experiment was carried out

Participants took part in a one-day trial in which they rode an Abarth F595, 595 Esseesse and 595 Competizione around the Mallory Park racing circuit, as well as experiencing fast laps from professional racers.

Loughborough University then performs a range of cardio and resistance training at their world-class sports facility.

To scientifically calculate people’s moods, a variety of different sizes and technologies are used, including class-leading facial recognition technology installed in gyms and cars to track people’s facial expressions, heart rate monitors, medical-grade wearable watches, and measuring devices. heart rate. -assessment quiz.

Combining physiological and psychological measures allows Loughborough University to accurately detect the emotions experienced during each activity, including feelings of happiness, surprise, joy, joy, anger and sadness.

Digital Health reader Dr Dale Esliger of Loughborough University, who led the experiment, said: “The importance of physical activity is widely reported, not only for a person’s physical well-being but also for their overall, emotional health.

“However, we know much less about how driving, particularly on a race track, can affect a person’s mood.

Preliminary data suggest that while activity on the track and in the gym has positive emotional benefits, in this case, the thrill element of track riding clearly stands out in elevating the mood of the audience.

Greg Taylor, General Manager of Fiat and Abarth in the UK, added: “Our products are not only designed to excite drivers on the road, they are also the perfect track day car.

“We’ve always known anecdotally the level of excitement our cars bring to drivers and passengers, but now we have some preliminary data from one of the world’s leading sports science universities to back it up.”

Starting with 595 for those looking to enter the world of Abarth, all of Abarth offers performance, adrenaline and emotion on the road. One of the most distinctive features of Abarth has always been his voice with people hearing Abarth before seeing him.
