“I’m as optimistic as possible. With this virus, you can never be too optimistic,” Fauci said in an interview with ABC.
“But if we look at what has happened in South Africa, the UK, Israel or even here in New England, they have passed their peak and infections are going down rapidly,” the epidemiologist said.
Although areas such as New England and the Northeast have generally passed the peak of infection, in other parts of the country such as the Southeast and the West, cases are still increasing, but Fauci believes the curve will follow the same model and by mid-February it started to decline.
The governor of New York state, in the northeast, announced on Friday that the coronavirus positive rate had reached 9.75%, confirming the declining infection rate, after hitting 23% a week ago.
“The positivity is falling and for the first time since December 20 we are back in single digits,” Governor Kathy Hochul said at a press conference held at the medical laboratory.
In this regard, he emphasized that the trend of new infections has fallen 66% in recent weeks and as of Thursday there were 28,296 new infections.
