London Gatwick Airport faced an eight-day strike in August

airport from Gatwickthe second busiest in the UK, faced “significant disruption” to its operations in August due to eight day strike summoned by some of its workers, the Unite union announced this Wednesday. Some 230 employees in charge of ground operations and passenger assistance at the airfield, about 50 kilometers south of London, will stop their activities to claim pay increases between days 18 and 22, and between days 25 and 29.

Between strike days including 28 August, a public holiday in the UK and one of the busiest days at the country’s airports during the summer. Unions estimate that 216 flights could be affected during the first four-day period of the shutdown, which will affect around 45,000 passengers.

Red Handling Company and Wilson James, which is responsible for ground services at Gatwick, “have not made an offer that meets employee expectations,” Unite said. The union’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, said other companies with workers at the airport “are ready to offer the latest wages and there is no reason for them not to do the same.”

A spokesperson for Gatwick told the media the airport is “aware” of labor disputes and “encouraging the staff of Wilson James, Red Handling and their unions to find a solution.”
