Lured with outrageous wages

British doctors were lured to Australia with the promise of seven-figure salaries and 20 days off each month.

In the UK, there has been a wage conflict between the authorities and the country’s health workers for a long time. In an attempt to capitalize on this discontent, an Australian recruiting firm has taken action: in an advertisement published in the well-known medical journal British Medical Journal (BMJ), they are now trying to lure British doctors to Australia.

Doctors are offered an annual salary of 240,000 Australian dollars – around NOK 1.7 million – for 10 shifts a month. The remaining 20 days of the month will be free so they can “travel, swim and surf in the sun”. All they had to do was move to Australia, he wrote Independent.

A former UK doctor described the advert as “depressing”.

– It’s hard to argue that this is not a tempting offer. This puts pressure on the government: If you don’t acknowledge the pay and working conditions problems of British doctors, guess where they go?, he wrote in a Twitter post, according to The Independent.
