Norway will spend more than 1 billion to train Ukrainian soldiers

This is according to Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp), who was in Germany on Monday and visited the training camp.

Aftenposten report the news first.

By the end of the year, Norway had contributed to the training of around 2,000 infantrymen and storm engineers from Ukraine. Training takes place in Norway and abroad.

– We have a goal, together with allied partners, we help train more than 50,000 Ukrainian soldiers by 2023, said Gram.

Controversy over Britain’s “loneliest sheep”.

Coaches throughout Norway

Some 700 Ukrainians were trained in Trøndelag in 2023 – at the same time several hundred more were trained in camps across the country.

Norway contributes to training both in the EU program and in a separate program led by the UK. Norway is one of the biggest contributors to this.

There are more than 300 Norwegian instructors contributing. This figure will be increased next year. In total, Norway will spend more than NOK 1 billion on the training. The money came from the Nansen fund to support Ukraine.

– Ukraine needs a more numerous and well-trained army to fight the Russian invasion force. Apart from that, they need to improve their competence in several professional fields. It is important for Norway to take part in this and contribute where we can, said Gram.

– Learned a lot

He said that this training also means that Norwegian troops are bringing many lessons to Norway.

– The experience gained by Ukraine on the battlefield is also useful for us. Close cooperation and coordination with other countries also provides important learning, Gram said.

The government has announced that Norway will contribute to the training of F-16 troops, as well as mine clearance forces in Lithuania.
