The UK’s previous heat record was 38.7 degrees and was set in 2019. Meteorologists expect it to be broken on Tuesday.

The first new record was set at Charlwood, where the temperature was measured at 39.1 degrees, but this did not last long.

Some time later, 40.2 degrees was measured at Heathrow Airport outside London. This is the first time temperatures above 40 degrees have been recorded in the UK.

The country is one of several countries in Europe experiencing a heat wave. Ahead of the heat wave, British authorities for the first time issued a red alert for extreme heat in the country. The British Meteorological Institute previously said there was likely to be a danger to life and health.

Meteorologists say temperatures may rise even higher on Tuesday.

The heat wave also caused disruption to train traffic in the country. Transport Minister Grant Shapps fears the railway will not withstand the extreme heat.

He told the BBC that the country’s transport system was not built for such a hot climate. Shapps was concerned that some of the railway tracks might be damaged by heat, and therefore someone would have to prevent trains from passing over them and risking derailment.

– We have to be very careful and aware of that. Therefore, there is a decrease in speed on most of the railway network.

Meteorologists have previously said that climate change is the cause of the heat wave, and they fear there will be more frequent and intense extreme weather in the coming years.
