On Monday, a hiker fell off a mountainside in Skjomtinden in Narvik. This was reported by the Nordland police district.

At 7:39 p.m., operations manager Lars Halvorsen confirmed to VG that the hikers had been retrieved from the mountain in a rescue helicopter. The person was transported directly to UNN in Troms.

– The person is a young man and a foreign national. He was moderately injured, UNN press officer Solveig Jacobsen told VG.

The rest of the traveling party should be in good condition, but they were taken for a medical check-up at the emergency room in Narvik.

Just before 7 p.m., a rescue helicopter landed near where the man had fallen. From there, the rescuers set off on foot.

Halvorsen’s operations manager said the fall was far above. There are difficult conditions and fog in the mountains.

– It’s steep and rough in the area. “We don’t know how far the person has fallen, but the person was conscious when we received the message,” Halvorsen told VG.

A crew of volunteers from the Norwegian Red Cross and People’s Aid also assisted in the rescue operation.

Skjomtinden is 1,575 meters above sea level and is a popular hiking destination.

The mountain is also locally known as the Sleeping Queen or Dronninga.
