R.Unido.-The British Home Secretary will remain in office despite the controversy over traffic violations

MADRID, May 24th. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman will stay in office despite controversy over the past week over alleged breaches of the ministerial code of conduct for trying to circumvent a traffic training course after committing a steering wheel violation.

As such, Braverman will continue to be in charge of Interior’s portfolio after the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, ruled out the need to investigate the case in greater depth, according to information from television channel Sky News.

The UK ‘prime minister’ has indicated in a letter sent to the minister that, after consulting his adviser on ethical matters, Laurie Magnus, he has decided to “follow her advice” despite the fact that pressure is being exerted on him as a result of the case.

The decision was made, as Sunak himself explained, after Braverman personally apologized for the “disruption” this had caused. However, his party guaranteed that what happened “did not violate the ministerial code of ethics”.

Sunak received immediate criticism after his decision on the matter was announced, for which liberal democrats branded him a “coward”. Meanwhile, Braverman insists on its “transparency” and “honesty”.

The most recent controversy, revealed by the ‘Sunday Times’, goes back to the summer of 2022, when Braverman broke the speed limit on the outskirts of London. To avoid paying fines, the administration proposed a training course for drivers, but the minister, who at the time was Britain’s Attorney General, tried to agree to tailor-made private classes to avoid public exposure.

At first, he tried it himself, but after the first refusal, he assigned a counselor to intervene. Braverman ended up paying the fine and forfeiting the corresponding card points, as he himself recalls.
