A man from the state of Connecticut has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for participating in the storming of the congress in Washington on January 6, 2021.

According to the verdict, the man took part in one of the most violent episodes that happened this January day. He used a stolen riot shield to push a police officer into a door, said the sentence announced on Friday.

Prosecutors have asked for 15 years and eight months in prison for Patrick McCaughey III. In that case, that would result in the longest sentences for those convicted of storming congress so far.

Judge Trevor McFadden decided to sentence McCaughey to seven years and six months in prison, followed by two years of parole.

25-year-old McCaughey is a prime example of everything dangerous and cruel about the January 6 stampede, the judge said.

“Your actions are among the most shocking crimes committed on this dark day,” the judge said.

McCaughey, from Ridgefield, Connecticut, expressed embarrassment at joining forces with supporters of President Donald Trump.

– I apologize that I behaved less like a citizen and more like an animal today, said the 25-year-old.
