Snow causes flight chaos

Winter chaos at Munich Airport began on Friday afternoon, when 160 planes were prevented from taking off and landing all night.

On Saturday morning, Germany’s second largest airport said that all flights had been canceled until 12. The DPA news agency reported that this included around 320 flights.

– Crews struggled to keep at least one runway operational and free of snow, wrote Germany Welle.

German Weather Service DWD weather forecasts show no signs of the snowy weather letting up any time soon, but there could be up to 40 centimeters of fresh snow in Bavaria in the next 24 hours.

Most local public transport has also been closed since Friday evening, due to continuing deteriorating road conditions.

Local newspaper Passau Neue Press reported a busy night for police in Bavaria, with each district reporting several hundred weather-related missions throughout the night.

– People sometimes have to wait hours before someone comes and helps them, said an unnamed police spokesman.

Sky News at the same time reporting similar challenges in the UK, which are expected to continue through the weekend.

There, Glasgow Airport in Scotland has canceled some flights due to snowy weather, and several sporting events have been canceled due to cold weather.

The UK Meteorological Office has issued a snow and ice warning at yellow level for the north and southwest coast of Scotland, as well as the east coast of England.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather warning covering five regions – East Midlands, West Midlands, North West, North East and Yorkshire and Humber – until December 5.
