Snowy weather causes problems in Germany and England

Heavy snow in Europe has caused flight cancellations, school closures and the postponement of football matches. Conditions are expected to get worse.

Several roads in Munich were closed on Saturday morning due to bad weather, lots of snow and trees blocking the roads.

It’s not just in Norway that winter hit this weekend. On Saturday morning, Manchester United players had to swap flights for bus transportation to get to their away match against Newcastle. The local newspaper wrote about it Manchester Evening News.

The postponement spoils the big club’s plans ahead of Saturday night’s Premier League game.

Football matches postponed

Snowy weather also caused problems in southern Germany.

On Saturday morning, thousands of people in the German state of Bavaria had to change their travel plans after 320 of the 760 scheduled flights from Munich Airport that day were cancelled. Several train routes to and from the city have been cancelled.

Saturday’s match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga was also postponed due to weather. It is still not certain how long the match will be postponed.

Police in the southern part of the state encouraged people to stay home while emergency services and snow removal worked.

In other areas of the country, traffic was also affected by ice and snow. Conditions are expected to worsen on Saturday evening.

At Frankfurt airport, several flights were canceled or delayed.

Several flights were cancelled

In England, some people woke up to snow on Friday morning, and it will stick around for a few more days.

In the Scottish city of Glasgow, several flights were canceled on Saturday morning due to bad weather, although staff worked through the night to clear snow from the runway.

By Saturday morning, air traffic should return to normal.

British health authorities have issued a yellow cold warning to the health sector in several regions in England. This means that they consider that “significant consequences are likely”, and that all health services in the relevant areas could be affected.

On Friday, 30 schools in Cornwall had to close or open later due to heavy snow.

Temperatures are expected to drop to -10 degrees in north-east Scotland over the next few days.

In Switzerland and Austria, authorities have issued avalanche warnings.

On Saturday morning, dozens of flights to and from Zurich airport were cancelled, and several departures were postponed.

The western Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg have issued an avalanche warning at the second highest level after snowfall of 50 centimeters overnight.
