Sweden and the UK agree to a new security agreement – similar notice to Finland

– Today we took a new step to strengthen defense cooperation, said Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson Press conference with Johnson on Wednesday.

If one country is attacked, the other will stand up – including militarily, the Prime Minister said of a mutual security and defense agreement.

– If Sweden is attacked, Great Britain will accept what Sweden demands. It is also the other way around, said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The meeting between the two prime ministers took place at Harpsund’s home outside Stockholm, where the two discussed the security policy situation in Europe.

Like Finland, Sweden is considering membership in NATO as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has warned of an increased military presence in the area around Finland and Sweden if they become NATO members. The Prime Minister of Sweden reminded of this during a press conference.

Finnish Agreement

The British government announced a similar agreement with Finland, where Johnson was traveling after his visit to Sweden.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinistö are expected to announce their NATO positions on Thursday.

The Finnish National Assembly’s Defense Committee has recommended NATO membership as the best option for Finland’s security.
