71 Chinese planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait on Saturday as China held military drills, said Taiwan’s Defense Ministry.

At first they said it was 42, before revising it at a later date.

In addition, nine Chinese ships also crossed the median line on Saturday morning, according to the ministry.

The drills were announced on Saturday evening Norwegian time and will run from Saturday to Monday.

– China will hold drills in the Taiwan Strait and north, south and east Taiwan “as planned”, said a statement from the army.

The drills are ongoing, the Chinese army said hours after the announcement late Saturday Norwegian time.

– The exercise is a serious warning against Taiwan’s separatist forces, who cooperate with external forces, the statement said.

This comes after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met with US Congressman Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday. China condemned the meeting.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that it would respond in a calm, rational and serious manner to the military drills. They didn’t want to escalate the conflict or cause further unrest.
