Since the USS Gerald R. Ford docked in Oslofjord on Wednesday morning, residents of the capital have flocked to get a glimpse of the world’s largest aircraft carrier. For some, an innocent outing causes great trouble for others.
This applies in particular to Ormøya and Malmøya, where the police described the situation as “untenable”. So many cars have traveled to the beautiful islands that permanent residents are now struggling to access essential services.
– We received a report from the municipality yesterday, stating that permanent residents who need home services are not getting access to them. It is not sustainable, operations manager Eirik Sannes in the Oslo police district told TV 2.
It’s difficult to estimate exactly how many cars have traveled to the islands, but in any case far more than the roads can handle.
– Frankly, it’s a bumpy, one-way street with barely a single meeting place. This creates major challenges for permanent residents, said Sannes.
He now has a clear message for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the ship, and at the same time comes with a warning to people who don’t listen to the police:
– People need to be calm about their own needs, and look at the bigger picture. If you want to go there, you have to use a bicycle or walk. We have posted signs and will be out there, and will issue fines to anyone who violates the signs, concluded the operations manager.
