The Minister of Defense visits Norwegian personnel training Ukrainian troops in Great Britain

– The need for training of the Ukrainian troops is very wide. The Norwegian personnel who contributed to the training of the Ukrainian army, through the British initiative Operation Interflex, did an excellent job, which was appreciated by Ukraine and its allies, said Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).

Norway participated with instructors for basic soldier training, who imparted a wealth of knowledge to the Ukrainian army for a limited period. Ukrainian army training in the UK has been carried out since June 2022. To date, more than 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received training.

Along with the defense ministers of the countries participating in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram visited soldiers from the Ukrainian armed forces participating in the British-led basic training programme, Operation Interflex, on 9 November.

– Heimvernet led a Norwegian mission to train Ukrainian soldiers in Great Britain. During five intensive weeks, Ukrainian soldiers receive education that will make them better able to defend their country, Gram said.

The first Norwegian contribution, consisting of a troop commander from the Home Guard and an instructor from the Army’s rapid reaction force (HRS) in the Northern Brigade, traveled to the UK in early October to begin preparations and coordinate with partners. This quota expires at the end of November.
– We plan for two more contingents in the first half of 2023, Gram concluded.
